THE GREENVILLE TOWER PROJECT
Some time ago we asked Tom Chubinski to head up the switch tower project, and he has made real progress. Most of you know that the C&MR is the owner of a century-old former C&O switch tower. The structure was moved from Greenville to Coopersville last year by West Shore Services and a number of our volunteers. It spent several months on its side behind the Feed Mill in Coopersville. Under Tom's direction two layers of shingles were removed, building permits were secured, and footing and foundation walls were poured. In mid-September a crane and flat-bed truck were used to move the tower to its new home at 1st Street. A nice crowd of on-lookers seemed pleased with the tower's addition to downtown Coopersville.
All eight of the tower's old and rotten windows were removed, and the interior's second floor was cleaned out. Some exterior trim was removed to make room for the new brick facade, hopefully coming soon, along with a new roof. As of mid-November, eight new 40" by 60" double-hung windows have been secured.
This old switch tower represents another piece of railway history preserved by our Company. When completed, we intend to follow a "Memorial Tower" theme, with the tower being dedicated to those C&MR volunteers who have passed away. The tower will feature a lighted bronze plate, with the names of the volunteers being remembered engraved on it, along with a brief history of the tower. Hopefully, in season a garden of summer flowers will surround the memorial tower as well.
